What’s Coauthors about?
It’s a work of fiction that derives from the experience of attempting to reintroduce myself to someone who I have not spoken to for a very long time. That was an experience that involved attempting to communicate with someone who I feel like I know but - based on objective evidence - could not claim to know with any certainty at all. It is about the brief experience of having a stranger who effectively existed only in my imagination in a position of governance over my self-image and sense of self-worth. I was therewith also intending for it to stand as an existential meditation on letter writing and the experience of “communicating” with someone who is not in the same place ( space and time ). It is also intended as a more general exploration of the issues that come from being in an ‘unreciprocated’ relationship (‘unreciprocated’ in more ways than one). Although not so obvious, the underlying driver for story is grief and the desire to reach out to someone who is not there anymore.
Inspired in particular by Notes From Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky. My hope is that my exploration of the situation in writing might offer some recognition/understanding/comfort.
Whether it’s worth a damn or not, I would like to do more writing. I have discovered that I have more energy and inclination for it by making the writing public immediately. I feel more invested/anxious when I think others might be reading it. That is why the writing on this web-site is presented as a work in progress. What’s there presently will almost certainly be refined, changed, deleted or added to as time goes on. If it looks like rubbish now, who knows - maybe it will be better in future.
